Believe the Hype: The Fanny Pack
Call it by its name…belt bag, bum bag, FANNY PACK—it’s the bag that you just can’t quit. You may roll your eyes at the Supreme-loving merch fans or Coachella crew with their fanny packs slung cross-body over a shoulder or dangling from short shorts, but even the most trend-averse amongst us can’t deny the convenience of a hands-free bag. You swore you wouldn’t cave to the trend but then you saw how footloose and fancy-free it made you feel. You got hooked. Me too.
The fanny pack came roaring back into stores and shopping carts about 2 years back and ever since we’ve seen iterations of this classic get re-released and re-jiggered for fans of both designer and fast fashion. This season I bought a classic black nylon Prada belt bag. It’s the OG. I love it because it’s legit 90s fancy without being too showy, great for travel or the school run, and is so low maintenance—I don’t have to worry about staining or scratching it and it allows me to be hands-free when I’m with my kids. I like to pair it with midi skirts and shorts and regularly find myself grabbing it when I’m going out for the evening too. It pulls a basic outfit together really nicely. It’s definitely an investment piece and I recommend searching on eBay or The RealReal if you don’t want to pay full retail price.
Isabel Marant’s take on the trend is this denim belt bag. This one is a bit roomier and is great if I need more space for when I’m out shooting or carrying extra lipgloss and Legos.
There are literally endless options for this style, so if you’re still on the fence you can totally dip your toe in the belt bag waters with an under $20 version or go all out with Gucci.
