CHATTING WITHCHATTING WITH

Tanya Taylor

Womenswear Designer

It didn't take long, but Tanya Taylor (yes, the Tanya Taylor) sure has bucked her "least likely to become a fashion designer" high school persona. After majoring in Finance in college, Tanya sought out a way to connect her art and finance backgrounds and took the leap into fashion at 22. After interning at Parsons and for Mary Kate and Ashley at Elizabeth & James, Tanya started her own label in 2013.

Tanya Taylor offers confidence-boosting pieces in an inclusive size range in signature hand-painted prints. Her looks have been spotted on Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift, Tracee Ellis Ross, Beyoncé, Emily Blunt, America Ferrera and Nicola Coughlan. In 2024, Tanya launched DELPHINE, a line of "going-out dresses" named after her personal alter ego. Let's hear more from Tanya... And Delphine.

“Always prioritize comfort. If your clothes are uncomfortable, you’ll never have a good day.”

My high school persona?
Artsy girl, only child, really close girlfriends, quiet- the least likely to become a fashion designer. I didn’t come out of my shell until I moved to NYC at 22 years old and then I became DELPHINE, my alter ego. Last year launched a brand all about her fun self :)

More from Tanya:

How do you define taste?
Being authentically and joyfully - you.

What trends in travel, interiors, and art do you expect we’ll see make their way into the fashion space over the next few years?
Monochrome living, personal style being brought into DIY home projects. I like that there is less judgment in fashion these days about what’s in and out and I could see interiors becoming more eclectic and personal being celebrated.

What advice do you have for someone who is just starting to define their personal style? Be playful, maybe find a character or a muse who helps you feel confident in trying new proportions, how to mix and always prioritize comfort. If your clothes are uncomfortable, you’ll never have a good day.

What are the five investment pieces you think everyone should have in their closet?

  • Our Hudson skirt- my preference is leather or linen
  • A pop color cashmere sweater you can wear on airplanes- hint hint lots coming from us soon
  • A men’s shirt in stripes or crisp white
  • A pair of Chanel flats
  • A great trench coat that is novel enough to stand out but you can wear all year long
  • A necklace from a grandparent that keeps you grounded

Who are a few women entrepreneurs you admire or whose careers you follow?
So many! And I am lucky to call them friends.

  • Giovanna Engelbert- her sense of play brings me joy and I love what she is building at Swarovski
  • Nell Diamond- love how she infuses her personality into every element of Hill House and really puts the customer first
  • Casey Fremont- super cool leader within the art world
  • Natalie Massenet- always thinking about what is next in culture and business and the most creative hardworking woman

Ellen Bennett - The Particulars

Interviews

Ellen Bennett

It’s not often that you get to hang with one of your heroes, but we gotta say, getting to know the kitchen’s coolest aproned crusader, Ellen Bennett, was one of the brightest spots of our 2020 interview series. We’ve long stan-ed Ellen’s innovative kitchenwear company, Hedley & Bennett, but after getting to know her on Zoom and then in person, we have shifted some of that love to the lady herself. Ellen is so zesty and clearly has tons of business savvy and true hustle. Her candor about starting a company and working to make it palatable for both restaurant chefs and home cooks is canny, cool, and way admirable.
