Let’s find your perfect shade.
Every year, I head down to Del Mar for the 4th of July, and it’s one of my favorite summer traditions. There’s something so special about spending the holiday by the beach with sunshine, great food, fireworks, and that laid-back SoCal vibe. Over the years, I’ve found a few go-to spots and little rituals that make the trip even better, and I’m sharing them all here. If you’re planning a getaway to Del Mar, this guide has all my favorite places to stop, eat, explore, and enjoy a long weekend by the coast.
Road Trip from Malibu
The drive from Malibu to Del Mar is half the fun, especially with a few favorite stops along the way:
Le Cafe de la Plage Malibu – I always kick things off with an iced coffee topped with honey, cinnamon, and a splash of cold foam. It’s the perfect treat to start the drive.
Lido Marina Village in Newport Beach – Once we’re out of LA, we make a pit stop at Lido Village to shop a few of my go-to spots like Elyse Walker and Sugar Paper. If we’re hungry, we grab a quick bite at Skål Pizza, so good and super convenient.
Outlets at San Clemente – A must-stop for a little shopping break. The open-air setup and great deals make it hard to resist.
In-N-Out in Oceanside – No road trip is complete without an In-N-Out stop, and the Oceanside location is our go-to right before we roll into Del Mar.
Where to Stay
L'Auberge Del Mar - A luxury boutique resort nestled in the heart of Del Mar Village.
Del Mar Beach Hotel - A stylish beachfront escape just steps from the ocean.
Airbnb - Lots of condos and houses to rent!
Where To Eat
Barefoot Coffee Roasters - The best iced coffee! I get the Mexican Mocha with no spice.
Harry’s Coffee Shop Del Mar - Is our go-to spot in Del Mar for pancakes!
The Cottage Del Mar - The newest lunch gem in town. The Cottage Club sandwich is a must, and don’t skip the mini churro for a sweet finish!
Stratford Court Cafe – If you’re after a relaxed, garden‑style café with comforting breakfast and lunch, friendly service, and a true local feel, Stratford Court Café delivers.
Jake's Del Mar - The perfect spot for a beach-side lunch. The seafood is top-notch, the vibe is relaxed, and the Mai Tais are an absolute must.
Brigantine Seafood & Oyster Bar - Fresh seafood with a view of the race track. Don’t miss the crispy fried artichokes paired perfectly with a light pink Cosmo.
To Do
San Diego County Fair - Hosted at the Del Mar Fairgrounds! Expect all the classic fair fun: games, rides, delicious food, pet exhibits, live music, and so much more.
Mini Golf - Such a fun activity to do with the family!
Beach Day - An obvious! I love any beach between 15th Street and 24th Street in Del Mar.
Belly Up Tavern - For the best live music.
Jimmy O's - Karaoke night!
