Ah, Malibu—there’s truly no place like it. No matter how many places I’ve traveled, I always find myself eagerly looking forward to coming home. Maybe it’s the unique ocean air, the fresh farm-to-table food that could rival any Michelin-starred restaurant, or the overall atmosphere. After spending the last six years here, it’s about time I shared my hidden gems with you. I promise there are restaurants on this list that will make you rethink reserving a spot at Nobu.
While there’s no shortage of Malibu guides, I hope this one offers a few more local pro tips alongside the classic Malibu staples.
Where to Stay
Malibu Beach Inn – Right on the beach, this spot is pure Malibu magic. Book an oceanfront room and let the waves lull you to sleep. The Sunday brunch is a must.
The Surfrider Hotel– This is classic Malibu. A relaxed beach vibe, with an exclusive rooftop bar and restaurant just for guests, overlooking Surfrider Beach.
Hotel June – Tucked in Point Dume, this boutique motel is the only spot in Malibu with a pool. After the 2018 Woolsey Fire, it was beautifully remodeled. With just 15 rooms and a cozy lobby, it’s got a laid-back charm.
Calamigos Guest Ranch – A little off the beaten path, but worth it. Set in the hills, this sprawling retreat is just 15 minutes outside Malibu. You’ll love the restaurant, pool, spa, and the private beach club on the PCH.
Malibu Brewing Company – A local favorite at Trancas Country Market near Broad Beach. Perfect for families—kids can play on the grassy field while you enjoy dinner. The menu is a crowd-pleaser.
Lily’s Malibu– Known for the best burritos in Malibu. I’m all about their fresh guacamole, and the kids devour the burritos—so big they’re basically two meals in one.
Le Café de la Plage – Our go-to local coffee spot. Farmshop pastries, delicious sandwiches, and a small but fresh breakfast and lunch menu. Weekends mean pancakes and avocado toast with the kids, and my guilty pleasure—an oat or almond milk latte with cinnamon and honey. It’s dangerously good.
Howdy’s Cafe – Two sides, both winners: one with the freshest burritos, the other with some of Malibu’s best sushi. Just don’t tell Nobu.
Irv’s Burgers– A classic 1950s burger joint with quick counter service and the freshest milkshakes. It’s a must-stop.
Lucky’s – I’ve loved Lucky’s in Montecito, so having one in the neighborhood is a dream. The Mr. Lucky’s cocktail—an incredible tequila drink—is chilled to perfection. The menu’s packed with salads, steaks, and seafood.
Sunlife Organics – High quality and high-priced, but worth it. The chocolate protein, banana, and peanut butter smoothie is my go-to. The kids are all about the acai Brazilian bowls.
Beauty & Wellness
Salt Salon– My friend’s locally-owned spot for color, cuts, blowouts, and waxes. She’s also curated a cute shop with hair products and fun gifts.
Wax It/Tan It – Just discovered this gem! A female-owned shop where you can get waxed and tanned in a cozy space. She even mixes her own organic tanning product for that perfect glow
Good Point Pilates – One of the best Pilates studios in LA, owned by Randi. Her surf-strength reformer classes are killer, and the new heated infrared yoga studio is a game-changer. My go-to for a solid workout—no need to leave Malibu!
Stairs at the Point Dume Headland– My weekly workout ritual. The stairs down to the beach are a serious challenge, especially with my 15lb rucksack. It’s a workout with a view!
Where To Shop
Catch Surf – Located in Malibu Country Mart, this spot is packed with surf trunks, tees, and their iconic foam boards. I love the branding and always pick up tees and trunks for the kids. Great for gifts, too.
Maxfield – A smaller version of the West Hollywood original, filled with Chanel, Celine, and all the top designers. My go-to for that perfect designer gift or something extra special for myself.
C Bonz - My go-to for incredible customizable gifts. This year, I bought my best girlfriends Levi’s denim jackets and had each one customized by the queen of embroidery herself, Celine aka C. Bonz. Her unique, quirky, funny, and sweet embroidery designs are one of a kind. With an endless rainbow of thread choices, she can usually create whatever you have in mind! Her shop is also filled with vintage jumpsuits and concert tees—a must-stop for anyone who loves a little retro flair.
Free People – I can always find something I “need” at FP.
Abierto – In the Point Dume plaza, this curated gift shop is a gem. Cookbooks, beauty items, candles, and my favorite Le Bon socks—plus a great selection of greeting cards. It’s my one-stop shop for gifts.
Surf Canyon – A new spot across from Whole Foods, made up of converted shipping containers. Each has something unique—a flower shop, Italian imports, surfboard shaper, and a yoga studio. Worth a visit.
KITH – The latest outpost for this streetwear and sneaker haven, complete with KITH Treats for a sweet, cold snack.
Frankies Bikinis – A female-owned, local favorite for bikinis and ready-to-wear. The perfect beachwear destination.
